Combined Honours Programs with SEOS

Discussion draft for SEOS and partner departments. We have been asked to revise the Calendar descriptions of our Combined Honours programs. Specifically, the programs that lack information about admission and graduation requirements for Honours. The proposals depicted in the following slides are intended to add this information and standardize calendar entries, not to change substantive program requirements.
  • Scope: Minimal revisions to the placement and formatting of admission information and Honours graduation standing across SEOS-related Honours programs. Earth Sciences Honours is the default structural template unless a program already has a more specific requirement that should be retained.
  • Substance: The next two summary tables show that current calendar language is uneven: some programs already state explicit entry, GPA, or Honours-course requirements, while others do not. The proposals mainly standardize where this information appears; where minimum GPA or course requirements are added, the intent is to use a common default across combined programs while preserving any more specific existing program requirements.
  • How to use these slides: Use the next two tables as a quick overview. The first summarizes what is explicitly stated in the current Calendar; the second summarizes the proposed presentation and highlights where requirements would be added, moved, or standardized. The program-by-program slides that follow show the exact current and proposed wording.
  • Calendar guidance: The Calendar office was consulted on both information placement and formatting. Their guidance was to move admissions information out of the Program requirements header, and they confirmed that bulleted formatting (our preference for lists) is appropriate.

Current

Program requirements

Students will normally apply for admission to the SEOS Honours Program at the end of the third year of their undergraduate Earth Sciences Program or combined program, although they may apply as early as the end of their second year and as late as the beginning of their last year. The general requirement for admission to the Honours Program is a cumulative GPA of 5.5 in 200-, 300-, and 400-level courses at the time of application.

Honours graduation standing

An Honours degree requires:

  • a graduating GPA of at least 5.5
  • minimum grade of B+ in EOS 499A and 499B

If a student fails to meet the standards for the Honours degree, while meeting the Major degree requirements, the student may graduate with the appropriate Major degree.

Proposed

Admission requirements

Admission to the Earth Sciences Honours Program requires the permission of the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences.
