Tide gauge on Mauke placed to the right of the road that comes down to the harbor, in a little hole that hopefully is exposed at low tide. I think we're about low tide right now. Protected, easy to measure up from. Should be a pretty good spot.

The coastline here is marked with distinct spurs and grooves of a larger sort of width and depth than what we were seeing on Atiu. I think I can convince myself that there are encrusters growing in the grooves so that it is paleo topography. It's also just too repetitive down the coastline. Could be that it's happening today but in the previous sites we've convinced ourselves that a lot of this is paleo reef topography.

The top part of the outcrop weathers in a way where you don't see much structure and in previous sites where we've seen this, it's usually because the surface itself has sort of been colonized by algae or bioincrusters. The cementation kind of eats away at what was once there. On this outcrop that shows up in places. What I'm wondering is, is that a different unit thrown on top from the Holocene, or is it somehow just a different subenvironment within the older reef?
